Ecological Technologies Ltd is developing a technology to use recycled plastic to create “Plastic Lumber” and use it to build affordable housing. This will also save the trees and forests.

Given the world housing affordability and environmental issues surrounding plastic waste, Ecological Technologies Ltd, is priming itself to eradicate this global crisis and move to alleviate the pressure felt in communities all over the world by developing and ultimately, implementing its creative and unique recycling solution. The Company is proposing a manufacturing plan that focuses on recycling plastic waste and repurposing it into boards or plastic lumber as a substitute for traditional wood products and building materials. There are many benefits to using plastic and it can be applied almost anywhere wood can, if not in additional applications.

According to a recent study from Science Advance, since the invention of plastic in 1907, 8.3 billion metric tons of virgin (non-recycled) plastic have been produced, generating 6.3 billion metric tons of waste, 79% of which has piled up in landfills while just 9% has been recycled. A total of 12 billion metric tons are expected to be in landfills or the environment by 2050 if current production and waste management trends continue.

Deforestation is a major contributor to global GHG pollution. Although figures differ, deforestation is responsible for more than 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities. Trees, as you are already aware, are exceptionally good at containing carbon dioxide. Approximately 50% of a tree’s dry mass (trees are approximately 65% water) is made up of carbon; however, as trees are cut down, the carbon is released back into the environment, allowing elevated levels of GHGs to fuel the world. It is normal to lose any tree coverage, and when handled correctly, even sustainable forestry is appropriate. The scale at which humans are chopping down trees, on the other hand, is unparalleled and unsustainable.

 

On average, we lose one football field of forest per second, which equates to a region the size of Italy being lost each year. Deforestation has more than doubled in the last 15 years, and depletion of vital tropical forests (mostly rainforests) has more than doubled in the last decade. Despite the high rate of deforestation and the importance of trees in trapping CO2 carbon, only 2% of climate change financing goes into maintaining and extending global forest coverage.

Ecological Technologies Ltd Lumber will effectively be solving two problems with one strategy: by providing economically sustainable materials for use in emergency housing, tackling housing affordability issues surrounding displaced families and refugees, and taking steps toward the production of environmentally friendly building materials and, ultimately, creating a cleaner planet for all.
